I too think the bower bird is wonderful! So too are the various birds of paradise! Saw a show on them recently, including the blue bird of paradise. BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!
I had a strong feeling that sooner or later you would paint a bowerbird. It's an animal I deeply feel connected to. My etsy shop is even named after the bowerbird! As always, this is lovely. bowerbirdbazaar.etsy.com
I have Bower birds visiting my garden. The Australian Blue Satin Bower Bird. (I have bush land across the road from my home.) The male has these amazing black feathers with a blue sheen to them their feathers look like satin and they have blue eyes and like most things blue like my blue pegs. Which I have found in odd spots in my garden where the bird have droped them. The female are beautiful too they are a green colour with pattern on their feathers. The male starts off with green feathers like the female, as the get older they are about four years old?( I'm not sure) they start to get their beautiful black feathers they do look funny as their feathers are changing. But they can be naughty they do like eating lettuces and spinach out of my vegie patch.
Have you seen "planet earth" from David Attenborough? You can see the whole film. The male spends more than a year making this "house". When the female finally decides that he is the one, she immediately leaves after the conception, leaving him all alone in his beautiful house. I thought that was really sad for him, after putting so much effort in building such a cosy place.
Of course you would, I know that you would be in terrific company because you are a terrific human Bower Bird - creating a gorgeous nest for your family.

PS Lovely to see an Aussie feathered friend featured!

Like Ann, I have seen the blue male satin bower birds growing up in Mt Nebo outside Brisbane, Australia. I remember playing in the bushland and coming across a bower full of blue pegs, straws, bottle-caps and such. What a beautiful, creative, (recyclable) way to impress lady birds.
I too have never heard of this unbelievable bird, so thank you for formally introducing us.
If you didn't see this bird, you would think that this little house had been built by human hands. Its the kind of arrangement I used to construct in the garden, using an upside-down frisbee - it was one of my favourite pastimes. However, I'm no Bowerbird. Its the ultimate bachelor pad, except it probably doesn't smell as bad as a human one ;)
I love the nest you've created in your Bowerbird painting.
This is funny - I called myself a bower bird just the other day, because I like to collect things and arrange them too! I do love David Attenborough, and how interesting this little clip... Oh, how I would like one of those little acorns!
oh, yes! i read about the bower bird in "step up books" when i was little. they also paint things blue with berrie juice as i recall. what a great bird, and of course you and manolo are bit bowery, aren't you? :) lovely painting, great bird!
This little video brought tears to my eyes. How amazing and wonderful and .... well what can I say? I plan to share this with my grandchildren...just the right ages to appreciate this very creative creature in nature. Thank you!
