Meet Lola!
Lola is my beautiful new Singer sewing machine I got from Santa this Christmas!
I named her Lola because it's what I would've named a daughter if I had one ;)
My other machine died (R.I.P.) from a fall a few months ago.
She's the one on my blog banner.
The machine cover I had made for it didn't fit Lola so I'm making her a new one :)
I dyed a yard or so of natural canvas into a military green color that I love
mixing olive green, black & a little bit of brown store bought fabric dye.
I cut patchwork birds out of 100% wool felt and attached them by hand
using blanket stitch and a few french knots
with my favorite stash of vintage crewel wool I bought a few years ago
from my dear friend Carlene's Etsy Shop.
I might turn the old cover into a new pillow. I'm so happy to be sewing again :)

Lola is a beautiful colour! And I love the cover you made for her.. Great dye job!
Long life for Lola.
My daugther is called Lola.
Santa brought me a portable pc and I called it Fuji.
I'm sure you'll make great things along with Lola.
Lola is very beautiful, as is her cover :-)
estaremos esperando las lindas cosas que saldrán de Lola y tu gran trabajo.
saludos navideños!!
very nice!
Love the machine, love the birds, love your blog. You inspire me to get more creative.
she looks like a Lola...strong yet beautiful!
Ok...dumb question since I'm not a sewer...does your new machine do blanket stitches or was that by hand? Either way, looks beautiful and so inspiring!!
Makes me almost wish I didn't have a hard cover for my new baby wot Santa brung me! The felt birds are so beautiful, I want to go dig through my felt stash and start embroidering forthwith!
Oooh, may your old machine rest in peace... How can you go for so long without a sewing machine!!! I couldn't live without mine!!!
Let's hope it will give you many, many miles of stitching!!!
Love the name, btw.
Hi,
I am a reader from Germany and I am following your blog a long time ago. I love your work and I have two of your paintings (a present from my mom and she has ordered them at Three potatoe four).
Lola and her new cover are beautiful.

Isn't it amazing that these machines can become our friends? I taught for Singer in the 70's and for Bernina in the 90's. I have 2 Berninas and my grandmother's old treadle Singer (1910 or so) and a 1936 Featherweight Singer. They are all like my children!
Lola is lovely but your work is even lovelier
She's beautiful!
Hello there! What a charming blog you have--I was so inspired.
So much so that I have featured on you and your blog on FAT Tuesday (Featured Art Tuesday) Artist Spotlight.

Ooo, Lola is the heavy duty Singer. I bet she's looking forward to making some of your beautiful pieces!
Love your Lola and its cover. :D Beautiful!
I just saw the title and thought - wooo a gorgeous looking friend for Turbo... but no!!! Totally love love love the name!!
lola is just stunning! i wish the tow of you a long and prolific partnership. cheers!
LOla is beautiful and I can tell she's fun! Your cover is gorgeous and now I want one!!
I think that Lola wil give you lots of happy times and when she is tired she can rest under her beautiful cover. Love the idea for the cover. Hugzz...Peebee
That is so funny... my sister wants me to have a baby, and to get me "in the mood" she gave me a plant last year, which she had named Lola. Since then, I've always thought that if I ever have a baby, and it's a girl, I'd like to name her Lola :-)
SO lovely, Geninne! Love the drab olive with the bright colors. :)
I love how the dyed colour came out on the fabric. The appliquéd pieces contrast fabulously against it! Congrats on the new machine in your life, Geninne! I still miss my Bernina sewing machine and overlocker/serger....had to sell them when we moved to the States for a while over 10 years ago. I now have an el-cheapo sewing machine but it does it's job so I can't really complain too much.
Congratulations! Lola looks like a good one. Have fun with her! Happy New Year!
Welcome, Lola..... hope you and Geninne will become "BFFs".
Lola is very beautiful...I love the finish.
Beautiful cover you are making for her...my machine cover is missing. Maybe I should stitch up a new cover too?
Gorgeous design and I love the colours you have chosen.

Isn't it lovely you adopted a new sewing machine? I am sure you will show us lots of new things with it!Ariadne from Greece
Seeing Lola has reminded me that 2011 is the year that I have resolved to learn to sew.
I am off to the shed to retrieve my own special Singer gifted to me by my lovely Grandmother.

PS: I would love to buy a signed copy of your 2011 journal, will they be available soon?
Love it!
I have a completely ridiculous request for you. I have dearly loved that December screen wallpaper you did. Seeing it on my computer every day makes me happy. I would love to see one for January...
(I'd love one for each month--you could sell them on etsy, somehow.)

your talent never ceases to amaze me. i feel inspired to be more creative in 2011, after things calm down a bit with taking care of a newborn.

Great cover! I have an old Singer machine that has a hard cover but I'd love to make a soft one like this to keep the dust off. Your birds are gorgeous :-)

I named my first kitten Lola for the same reason :)
Oh I love this! Please please sell pillow covers like this in your shop! My fiance & I are beginning to decorate our first home together, and our bedroom inspiration is a set of three beautiful bird prints of yours! Some pillows would be a perfect addition. =) LOVE your artwork.
I just got one as part of big studio purchase from my neighbour and it works so well - surprisingly fast for a little domestic machine.
have a wonderful new years!

Lola is lovely! I got a new machine too for Christmas. I haven't unpacked her yet as I'm still reorganizing my studio and if I unpack her I'll never finish. Haven't named her yet either, as I'm waiting to see what her disposition is. I haven't sewn on a machine since I was a teenager. I hope I can remember how!
Love Lola! I got a new sewing machine as well, but I named mine Betsy!
i love your applique!!!
