When the neighborhood tribe was young they used to bring me all sorts of critters and amphibians to keep for a time and observe. This entailed much hunting of grasshoppers to feed the zoo. Never forget R feeding a grasshopper to a praying mantis and hollering (while I was cooking dinner) Mrs. Ponder, Mrs. Ponder, you gotta see this, it's eating its guts out!!!
I adore the preying mantis. I try to capture them in photo whenever I see one. I have a bit of video of one also. He was brown and in the grass, but the video is not nearly as wonderful as yours.
Great video! I love the music, am off now to find his album to buy. We have lots of walking sticks here, but mostly brown. Mantis are less common, truly a benign BEM!!
Well, once I (accidentally of course;)), set those walking sticks free when I was at primary school... And that mantis... Interesting, but very slow;) Wonder where she went and what she was doing when you stopped filming?
Cuando fuimos a Oaxaca, compramos un alebrije de un mantis para mi hija porque se dice que las senoras comen los senores despues de que they make whoopie!
Wow! How wonderful. I have never seen one - except in photographs. I love the little red mouth. Do they fly? Jump? Knocked out yet again by where you live.
I have always been fascinated by this creature...that is until I found out they can kill a hummingbird. I know it's all part of the food chain, cycle of life, but still, a little hummingbird? EEP!
Wonderful post! That first photograph looks like he's doing a waltz with himself. I think the rocking motion is a further camouflage action; in imitation of a leaf in the wind.
I had the pleasure of seeing a praying mantis on my window last year. I could only photograph it, no video! In US, I think they are considered an endangered species, not to be killed or captured. I wonder if it's the same in Mexico?
We saw our first praying mantis in Spain, they are bigger than I expected, but arn't they lovely (in their own way!)

Yes, walking sticks are really something to watch aren´t they....ugh, my brother used to keep them in jars!!!
a work of art indeed.
What an awesome notebook page!!!
We had a guy just like him climbing our brick wall a couple days ago. You are right they are slow and steady.
fabulous and otherworldly!
Fantastic pictures of such a lovely bit of nature.

Love both of these critters. Enjoy watching them so much!! Your photos are excellent!!
We discovered one on a plant right outside our front door last month. Haven't seen him since. :)
They are indeed magnificent creatures. Stunning photos and video, and the music accompaniment is perfect.
They're not so popular in my house since one painfully bit my girl's finger!

Jo said about biting. Mantis can bite a finger or walking stick?
Cool pics! I am not sure if I am loving the mantiss yet... Can't decide between "Eeeuw!!!" and "Ooooh!!!"... ;-)
I love the triangular shape of the head...I found this so surprising. The rocking motion makes me wonder why they move like that...
I love the delicate shape and striking green color of the praying mantis.
Mantises are fantastically interesting, aren't they?
:D

okay, I'll admit it...they give me the creeps....fasinating but creepy...
They make me feel as though they're trying to decide if I'd taste good for lunch... eeeeeeeeck
Oh! They are so majestic! Your video is phenomenal!
These are so awesome. When you look at the detail God created in these amazing creatures, you can remember how great He is.
I love receiving your e-mails, and stepping into your world for a few minutes it's like receiving a bit of oxygen.

i found a little baby mantis in the forest today

Nice video. Looks like she's about to lay eggs too.

Oh wow, it look so fascinating. I've never seen them in real life, only photos, so thanks for the video.
i like your fantastic visitors, they remind me of mine :)

Aren't the amazing little creatures? We have them in our back yard in western Nebraska!
I found a preying mantis downtown on a sidewalk, and tried to rescue it. IT BIT ME!! :^D I managed to get it to a nice grassy area in a park, though.
